Introduction to Wilderness First Aid

What is Wilderness First Aid?

"Wilderness First Aid is a comprehensive lesson in how to react, respond, and save life in remote, life threatening situations."

What is Wilderness First Aid? Wilderness First Aid is emergency medicine when conditions like delayed transit and limited medical resources are an issue. In other words, any time you are in the backcountry, in a rural area, in a third world country. Any place where environmental emergency or natural catastrophe have effected the timely provision of medical care or the quality of resources we usually take for granted. Are you an hour from a hospital? Are the roads snowed in or the bridges washed out? That’s what we mean by delayed transit. Are the medical resources what you carry on your back? Has your normally clean water supply been compromised? That’s what we mean by limited medical resources.

Each year as winter approaches and the days grow shorter, I replace batteries in all the equipment that travels with me to the backcountry. My headlamp, a small penlight. These things are rarely, if ever used by me, but in the event they are needed . . . I want the assurance those bulbs will burn brightly and light my way to the bottom of my pack, or out of the woods on a cold night.

Wilderness First Aid is the same. Your skills require constant attention. You don’t get your ticket punched or your hand stamped. This isn’t plug and play. You have to work at it, and periodically return to study again.

Our mission is to promote the retention of the largest proportion of class material over the longest period of time for the greatest number of students. Wilderness First Aid is designed, and the class is conducted, with that primary goal in mind.

Wilderness First Aid is a program of the Wilderness Safety Council. Invariably in WFA classes there are issues raised that have to do with Leadership Development, Team Building, and Wilderness Safety Management that cannot receive the attention they deserve in an 18 hour class devoted to Wilderness First Aid. Wilderness Safety Council exists to answer that need. If you are affiliated with a group that would benefit by additional training in any of these areas, we welcome your inquiries.
